Aesthetic Consultation Questions for Injectors: What to Ask

The best consultation questions for injectors cover five things: what the client wants to change and why now, their injectable and treatment history, health and medication screening, their current skin care, and their schedule and budget. Ask them in that order and you finish the consultation with enough to plan the injection and everything around it.

Goals: what and why now

Start open: what bothers you when you look in the mirror, and what made you book now? The answer to the second question often matters more. An upcoming wedding, a new job or a recent breakup changes the timeline and the level of change the client is comfortable with. Ask them to point to the area rather than name a treatment, and ask what a good result would look like in their own words. Write that sentence down; it is your measure of success later.

History: injectables, treatments and reactions

Ask what they have had, where, when and how they felt about it: neurotoxin, fillers, collagen biostimulators, threads, lasers, peels, microneedling. Ask what they did not like. Clients who were unhappy elsewhere rarely say so unless asked directly. Note the dates, because they drive your treatment calendar, and ask about any past reactions to treatments or products. Then ask about upcoming events, dental work, vaccinations and travel. These questions affect timing, and clients rarely think to mention them on their own.

Health and medication screening

Use your practice's intake form and go through it out loud. Ask about pregnancy or breastfeeding, neuromuscular conditions, autoimmune conditions, active skin infections or cold sores, allergies, recent surgery, and all medications and supplements, including blood thinners and anything that affects healing. You screen and record; any decision about a medical condition or a medication belongs to the client's physician or your medical director. Never suggest that a client stop or change a medication.

Skin care and lifestyle

Ask the client to name every product they use morning and night, or to send photos of them. Ask about retinoids, including a prescription retinoid if their physician prescribes one, exfoliating acids and at-home devices. Ask about sun exposure, smoking, sleep and recent weight changes. These answers show you what the skin needs between injectable visits, and they are the start of the home care plan. Finish with schedule and budget: how often can you realistically come in, and what do you want to invest over the next few months?

Worked example

Worked example: a consultation that changed the plan

A client in her early 50s booked for neurotoxin to the frown lines. In the consultation she mentioned a daughter's wedding in ten weeks, a prescription retinoid from her dermatologist, and frustration that her skin looks tired even when her lines are soft. She can come in every three to four weeks and wants a clear total budget.

The plan

  1. 1Week 0: neurotoxin visit as booked, with intake screening reviewed and recorded.
  2. 2Week 2: follow-up check and hydradermabrasion once her protocol's settling period has passed.
  3. 3Week 5: superficial peel, timed around her retinoid as her physician advised.
  4. 4Week 8: hydrating facial, with nothing new introduced afterward.
  5. 5Week 9: final check one week before the wedding, with the next neurotoxin visit booked for after the event.

Home care

  • Gentle cleanser and rich moisturizer
  • Prescription retinoid as directed by her physician, held around the peel
  • Vitamin C serum in the morning
  • Daily broad-spectrum SPF

The professional built the plan backward from the wedding date and kept the last week free of anything new. The question about upcoming events turned a single injection into a ten-week plan.

Questions professionals ask

How long should an injector consultation take?
Many practices plan 15 to 30 minutes for a new client, more if the client has a complex history. Returning clients need a shorter review focused on changes since the last visit.
What should I do if a client's answers raise a medical concern?
Record it and refer it to your medical director or the client's physician before treatment. Your role is to screen and document, not to decide on medical questions.
Should I ask about skin care in an injectable consultation?
Yes. It tells you what the skin needs between visits and how the client will tolerate skin treatments, and it is the natural start of a longer plan.

Let Moredom draft it for you

Moredom turns your consultation notes into a structured assessment and drafts the skin analysis, the between-visit treatment plan and the home care from it. It flags contraindications and timing points for you to review with your protocol, so nothing important is lost between the intake form and the plan.
